Custom LMS Development
A learning platform built around how you teach, certify and sell: courses, assessments, verifiable certificates, live classes, payments and multi-tenant academies, on web and mobile.
What is custom LMS development?
Custom LMS development is building a learning management system designed around how you teach and sell training: courses, assessments, verifiable certificates, live classes, payments and reporting, for one organisation or many client organisations. Co-Mate designs and builds the platform, migrates existing content and learners, integrates it with your systems, and you own the code.

LMS development is part of Co-Mate's digital transformation services. We build new platforms, and we also customise and integrate existing ones such as Moodle when that is the better route.
Who this is for
Who is a custom LMS for?
Organisations for whom training is a product or a compliance requirement, and generic platforms have become the bottleneck.
Typical buyers
- Founders of training companies and online academies
- Heads of L&D at enterprises with distributed teams
- Professional bodies running certification programmes
- Education businesses selling to schools or corporates
Signs you need it
- Courses live in one tool, payments in another and certificates in a third.
- Each corporate client needs its own branding, users and reports, and you manage it by hand.
- Compliance training completion has to be proven to auditors from spreadsheets.
- Plugins and workarounds make your current platform slow and fragile.
- Your learners mostly use phones and the current experience on mobile is poor.
What we build
Which LMS features do we build?
A modular platform: start with the learning core, then add commerce, live teaching and multi-tenancy as your programme grows.
| Module | What it does |
|---|---|
| Course builder | Video, documents, SCORM, quizzes and assignments organised into modules, with drip release and prerequisites. |
| Assessments | Question banks, randomised tests, timed exams, manual grading, rubrics and attempt rules. |
| Certificates | Branded certificates on completion with unique IDs, expiry and renewal, and public verification links. |
| Live classes | Scheduled sessions with video conferencing integration, attendance tracking and recordings added to the course. |
| Multi-tenant academies | Separate branding, users, catalogues and reports for each client organisation from one platform. |
| Payments & enrolment | One-off purchases, subscriptions, coupons, corporate seats and automatic access on payment. |
| Reporting & compliance | Progress, scores, completion and certification status by learner, team, client or course, with exports. |
| Mobile learning | Responsive web app, with optional native apps and offline video for low-connectivity regions. |
Custom LMS or Moodle: which fits?
Moodle fits when you need reliable course delivery and its structure matches your programme; a custom LMS fits when the platform is part of your product or your workflows are unusual.
| Need | Moodle (customised) | Custom LMS |
|---|---|---|
| Standard courses and quizzes | Strong out of the box | Built to your design |
| Selling to many client organisations | Possible with plugins and configuration | Designed in as multi-tenancy |
| Brand and learner experience | Theme-based, limits on deep changes | Fully your own |
| Unusual workflows (practical sign-offs, field assessments) | Custom plugin work | Native |
| Upgrades | Plugins must be kept compatible | Under your control |
If Moodle fits, we will help you customise and integrate it rather than build from scratch.
Can AI be part of the platform?
Yes, and it works best when it is grounded in your own course material. Useful examples are a course assistant that answers learner questions only from the lesson content, draft question generation for instructors to review, automated feedback on written answers against a rubric, and summaries of learner progress for managers.
Each is built with the same guardrails as our AI agents and chatbots: answers cite the source lesson, instructors review generated content, and learner data stays private.
How does an engagement work?
Five phases, each with a clear output you can review before the next one starts.
- 1
Discovery
We look at your programmes, learner journey, how you sell, and how you report to clients or regulators.
- 2
Architecture & scope
You get the platform architecture, tenancy model, video and hosting plan, prototypes of key screens and a module scope.
- 3
Build in milestones
The learning core ships first, then commerce, live classes and tenants in milestones, each tested with real learners.
- 4
Launch
Content and learner migration, admin and instructor training, and a supported launch.
- 5
Support & scale
New features, integrations, performance tuning for peak enrolments, hosting and monitoring.
Which engagement model fits?
There are three ways to work with Co-Mate; the right one depends on how settled your scope is and how long the system will keep evolving.
| Model | Best for | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-scope project | A defined first version or a specific integration with clear requirements. | We agree modules, milestones and acceptance criteria up front, then deliver against them. Changes are scoped and agreed before work starts. |
| Dedicated engineering team | Larger programmes, evolving roadmaps or several systems built in parallel. | Senior engineers work as an extension of your team on your priorities, with sprint planning, demos and shared tooling. |
| Ongoing retainer / support | Systems already live that need maintenance, monitoring, hosting support and steady improvements. | A reserved block of engineering time each month, with agreed response times for issues and a backlog of improvements. |
Training companies launching a new platform usually start with a fixed-scope project for the first release. Platforms that are the business itself often move to a dedicated team to keep shipping features, while internal L&D portals typically need only a retainer after launch.
What does the LMS integrate with?
Learning data is more useful when it flows into HR, sales and finance. We connect the LMS through APIs and single sign-on, as part of our system integration work.
- Moodle
- Zoom and Microsoft Teams
- Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 SSO
- Payment gateways
- HRMS and payroll
- CRM (custom, Zoho, HubSpot, Salesforce)
- Accounting software
- WhatsApp Business Platform
- Email and SMS
- Video hosting and CDN
Product names are used only to describe compatibility. They belong to their owners; Co-Mate is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.
Tech & infrastructure
Video at scale
Adaptive streaming through a CDN, with signed URLs so paid content cannot be shared freely.
Cloud or on-premise
Hosted on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or your own servers, sized for your peak enrolment periods.
Security & privacy
Tenant data isolation, role-based access, encrypted connections and privacy controls for learner data.
Ownership
Your code, content and learner data, exportable in open formats.
Where do we work?
Anywhere. Co-Mate is a remote-first engineering studio in Kerala, India, delivering for businesses worldwide.
GCC
Our working day covers the whole GCC business morning and early afternoon.
Europe & UK
Strong overlap with European and UK working hours for calls, reviews and releases.
US & Americas
Scheduled overlap with US mornings for workshops, demos and decision meetings.
India, APAC & Australia
Same or near time zone, so day-to-day collaboration is simple.
Discovery workshops, demos and training run online. You talk directly to the senior engineers who design and build your system, not to an account manager relaying messages.
