Rebuild / modernize your old software
Legacy Software Modernization
Old PHP, desktop, VB, Access, Excel-based or on-premise systems turned into secure, fast, cloud-ready web apps. Phased migration with no big-bang downtime and zero data loss.
What is legacy software modernization?
Legacy software modernization upgrades ageing business systems, such as old PHP, desktop, VB or Access applications, into secure, fast, cloud-ready software. Co-Mate keeps your business rules and data, migrates in phases with no big-bang downtime, and can add an API layer so old systems connect to modern tools.
Legacy software modernization is one of the three paths in Co-Mate's digital transformation service, alongside AI workflow automation and custom software. It is the right starting point when the system you already run holds the business logic but is slowing you down.
The problem
When is it time to modernize your old software?
The software that runs your business still works, mostly. But every year it gets slower, riskier and harder to change.
- Slow screens and reports that take minutes, or time out at month end.
- Security risks: unsupported PHP or .NET versions, no HTTPS, shared passwords.
- Desktop or on-premise software that only works in the office.
- One developer who understands the code, and they are getting harder to reach.
- No API, so connecting e-invoicing, WhatsApp, payment gateways or BI tools is painful.
- Excel and Access workarounds that have quietly become critical systems.
The solution
Modernize without stopping the business
Replacing a system that runs your operations is risky if done all at once. Our approach is incremental. We put a modern foundation and API next to your existing system, then move functionality across one module at a time. Users switch over gradually, the old system keeps running until it's no longer needed, and data is reconciled at every step.
Sometimes the right answer is smaller: fixing the slowest reports, adding an API, or moving the system to the cloud securely. We'll tell you when a full rebuild isn't worth it.
What we deliver
Re-architecture to a modern stack
Rebuild on FastAPI (Python), Node.js or modern PHP with a clean, documented architecture and automated tests.
Zero-loss data migration
Scripted, repeatable migration with reconciliation reports that prove every record and balance moved correctly.
Phased migration
Module-by-module replacement (the strangler pattern), so old and new run side by side. No big-bang weekend cut-over.
API layer on top of old systems
When a rewrite isn't justified yet, we wrap the old system in a secure API so new tools can connect to it.
Performance fixes
Query optimisation, indexing, caching and ETL redesign for slow reports and overnight jobs.
Security & cloud readiness
Authentication, role-based access, encryption, backups, audit logs and deployment to the cloud or your servers.
Which approach fits your system?
| Situation | Recommended approach | Typical stack |
|---|---|---|
| Old PHP web app, still core to the business | Phased rebuild behind a new API, module by module | FastAPI or Node.js, PostgreSQL, modern front end |
| Desktop / VB / Access application | Rebuild as a web app; migrate data with reconciliation | Web app, PostgreSQL, role-based access |
| Excel-based process run by a few people | Small web app replacing the spreadsheets | Lightweight web app with exports |
| Stable system, but no way to integrate | API layer on top; no rewrite yet | Secure REST API over the existing database |
| Slow reports and ETL jobs | Performance tuning and ETL redesign | Query optimisation, indexing, PostgreSQL migration |
Our modernization process
- 1
System review
We study the code, database, integrations and how people actually use the system, then list what to keep, fix or replace.
- 2
Modernization plan
A written plan with architecture, migration order, risks and a fixed-scope proposal for the first phase.
- 3
Foundation & API
Set up the new stack, CI/CD, authentication and an API layer, connected to the existing data.
- 4
Module-by-module rebuild
Replace modules in priority order. Users switch over gradually while the old system keeps running.
- 5
Data migration & reconciliation
Final migration runs with reconciliation reports signed off by your team.
- 6
Decommission & support
Retire the old system safely, keep archives accessible, and support the new one.
